Speaking Tips So-called filler-words, such as “like”, “um”, “so” and many others, are only said to buy time, while you think of what you are going to say next. Though in casual conversation these words are usually no big deal, but in a professional environment they could be a detractor, if one says, for example, “so” in every other sentence. Remember to be aware of the words you are using in everyday conversation! THE REALITY IS My coworker constantly says, “The reality is…” followed by something she is completely wrong about, and our bosses always call her out. WHILST Does anyone remember the terrible mom who posted by asking her daughter to keep paying rent after moving out? She used the phrase “whilst” several times. Such word does not exist in English. FOR ALL INTENSIVE PURPOSES “For all intensive purposes” - instead of “For all intents and purposes”. MYSELF They say "myself" rather than "me". It is practically a meme. COMMENTATE Reminds me of "to comment". That is what commentators do. ORIENTATE The same is true for “orientate”. Someone is not “orientated” but rather “oriented”. HENCE It is misused 99.9% of the time by those who say “Hence why”. |
